Etherchannel merupakan sebuah teknologi yang dapat menjadikan multiple physical links menjadi single logical links. Berikut beberapa kelebihan etherchannel:
Apabila kita lihat pada gambar di atas yaitu ada dua switch dan dua komputer yang terhubung ke masing-masing switch. Masing-masing interface komputer yang terhubung ke switch kapasitasnnya 1000 Mbit, sedangkan link antara switch hanya 100 Mbit. Lalu, apabila salah satu dari komputer tersebut mengirimkan paket lebih dari 100 Mbit dari link bandwidth yang tersedia. Maka bandwidth akan congestion dan trafik akan droped.
Sebenarnya ada dua solusi untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut
- Mengganti link antara switch menjadi 1000Mbit atau 10Gb
- Menambahkan multiple links dan menggabungkan link tersebut menjadi etherchannel
